Clinical History
The patient is a 44-year-old female with known right
breast cancer. We have been asked to identify the
sentinel node from the region of the recent breast
cancer excision.
Technique
Two mCi of Technetium 99m Sulfur Colloid of 100
nanometer or less in diameter was injected into
the center of the breast mass and the surrounding
edges. Multiple images were obtained for the first
several hours and there is no evidence of movement
of the colloid. At 4 1/2 hour delay, uptake could be
identified in 2 sentinel nodes which were best seen
in the right lateral and 45 degree right anterior
oblique position. At 7 1/2 hours the nodes were
marked with a magic marker on the patient's
skin and the markings were covered with occlusive
plastic adherent transparency to protect the marks on
the skin until the time of resection the following morning. The
patient left the Division of Nuclear Medicine in good
condition will shortly be seen by her surgeon.
