Clinical History

This is a 53-year-old patient with a melanoma excised from her left forearm. During a routine follow-up exam, a mass was seen on her chest x-ray. The CT confirmed this small mass.

Technique

The patient was administered 11 mCi of F18 labeled fluorodeoxyglucose. Forty-five minutes later, whole body imaging was performed utilizing six table positions.

Findings

Three dimensional whole body images and standard transaxial, sagittal, and coronal images were reconstructed. No identifiable focal uptake of glucose is identified in the apex of the right lung. No definite abnormal uptake is seen in the hila or mediastinum. No abnormal activity is seen in the abdomen or pelvis.

Impressions

NO IDENTIFIABLE FDG UPTAKE IS SEEN IN THE RIGHT APEX, WHICH WOULD SUGGEST THAT THE LESION SEEN ON CT AND CHEST X-RAY WOULD BE MORE LIKELY FROM SCARRING OR BENIGN ETIOLOGY RATHER THAN A MALIGNANCY.

Comments

The patient contracted a case of tuburculosis as an adolescent, and the mass seen by x-ray and CT is probably attributed to fibrotic scarring in the lung.
