Clinical History

This is a 44-year-old male with an elevated CEA and an excessive smoking history. The PET scan is being done to evaluate for possible neoplasm.

Technique

Forty-five minutes after the uneventful administration of 10.15 millicuries of F18 FDG, whole body imaging was obtained in the axial, coronal and sagittal planes.

Findings

1.There is normal metabolic activity identified within the base of the brain, heart, liver, kidneys with excretion into the urinary bladder.
2.There is abnormal metabolic activity identified within the right neck anteriorly as well as the superior mediastinum, the largest of which measures 4.24 sq cm with a maximum SUV value of 3.34 and a mean SUV value of 2.62.
3.No other areas of abnormal metabolic activity are identified.

Impressions

INCREASED METABOLIC ACTIVITY WITHIN THE RIGHT NECK AND SUPERIOR MEDIASTINUM. GIVEN THE SUV VALUES, THESE AREAS ARE SUSPICIOUS FOR MALIGNANCY AND A CT OF THE NECK IS RECOMMENDED FOR FURTHER EVALUATION.
