Clinical History
A 57-year-old patient with esophageal carcinoma being evaluated for metastatic disease.
Technique
The patient was administered 10 millicuries of F18-labeled fludeoxyglucose. Following the infusion of the tracer, a 45-minute
uptake elapsed, with the patient undergoing whole body PET imaging. Volume and transaxial image reconstruction was
performed.
Findings
There is focal intense uptake of the tracer in the region of the gastroesophageal junction measuring approximately 5.9 cm in vertical extent and 4.9 cm transversely. Focal intense uptake is also identified in the left adrenal
gland, corresponding to the adrenal mass seen on the prior CT study. There is also a small focus of increased uptake
identified inferiorly to the main mass in the gastroesophageal region, which is in the area of a lymph node noted on the CT
study, most consistent with metastatic adenopathy.
Impressions
EVIDENCE OF INTENSE UPTAKE OF TRACER IN THE PATIENT'S PRIMARY ESOPHAGEAL CARCINOMA, WITH
INTENSE UPTAKE IDENTIFIED IN THE LEFT ADRENAL CONSISTENT WITH AN ADRENAL METASTASIS, AND UPTAKE,
TO A MUCH LESSER DEGREE, BUT STILL SUSPICIOUS FOR METASTATIC ADENOPATHY INFERIOR TO THE MAIN
TUMOR MASS.
