Clinical History
The patient has obstructive jaundice. Biopsy of the region of the ampulla shows adenocarcinoma with some
squamous component.
Technique
Fluoride-18 labeled deoxyglucose, 9.66 mCi, was injected with whole body scanning initiated 45 minutes later.
Findings
There is a discrete focus in a teardrop configuration of increased activity in the region of the ampulla of Vater. This extends
proximally along either the duodenum and/or distal common bile duct. The rest of the exam shows no foci of abnormal
activity to suggest metastasis. Physiologic activity is seen in the heart, bone marrow, liver, kidneys, and bladder. There is
mild hydronephrosis of the right kidney.
Impressions
THE FINDINGS ARE CONSISTENT WITH NEOPLASM OF THE AMPULLA OF VATER WITHOUT EVIDENCE OF
DISTANT METASTASES.
