Clinical History
The patient is a 14-year-old female with cystic fibrosis and shortness of breath.
Technique
Ventilation:
The patient received a single breath of 11 mCi of xenon-133 gas. Inhalation, equilibrium and wash-out images
were obtained.
Perfusion:
The patient was administered 4.1 mCi of Technetium-99m MAA, and planar images were obtained in multiple
projections.
Findings
Ventilation:
The ventilation views demonstrate multiple bilateral ventilation defects as well as air-trapping in the lower lobes in the wash-out images.
Perfusion:
Perfusion images demonstrate matched defects corresponding to the ventilation defects.
Comparison is made with the patient's concurrently performed chest x-ray of 04/07/99. The chest x-ray
shows moderately severe changes of cystic fibrosis, bilaterally.
Impressions
MATCHED VENTILATION/PERFUSION DEFECTS, BILATERALLY. THE MATCHED DEFECTS, IN
VIEW OF THE CHEST X-RAY ABNORMALITIES, PLACES THE PATIENT IN LOW PROBABILITY
FOR PULMONARY EMBOLISM.
